Looking again: What was the political and social “static” that surrounded the Centre for Art Exhibitions of the GDR (Zentrum für Kunstausstellungen der DDR or ZfK), and how can its work be reflected and conveyed today? What were the intentions associated with these artworks? What was communicated between the lines, what fell through the cracks, and what was especially significant? Media theorist Friedrich Kittler views Rauschen (noise or static) as the moment when the medium, in this case the system, makes itself visible – no longer a transparent carrier of messages, but a structure in itself. In the ifa-Gallery’s exhibition, “static” stands for a polyphonic playback. Archival, scholarly and artistic enquiries bring a chapter of art history into focus that, although deeply rooted in international relations and cultural policy, has yet to be considered in full.

Select historic exhibitions such as HAP Grieshaber, Karla Woisnitza’s Tecuna Projekt and Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange (ROCI) offer glimpses into the ZfK’s activities and the two ZfK-Galleries that once operated in East Berlin.
