This is the first exhibition of important artworks from Germany from 1949 to the 2010s to focus on developments in art in both German states and thus also reflect on the historical period of the division of Germany. Curators Matthias Flügge and Matthias Winzen have selected 320 works by more than 90 artists from the impressive ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) collections of contemporary art.

This comprehensive new presentation of works of art from East and West Germany breaks with the simple distinction between the Federal Republic and the Democratic Republic, showing it to be artistically inaccurate. Art did not in fact just develop in alignment with the course of political history. Instead, themes and techniques in art emerged in East Berlin and in Cologne, in Annaberg and Oberkassel, or in Dresden and Munich, from the artistic processes themselves, which today reveal many parallels and subtle relationships.
